St. Abban the Hermit was a 5th–6th century Irish saint who lived a life of solitude and prayer, remembered for his preaching and monastic foundations that helped spread Christianity in Ireland and England.
He is associated with places like Mag Arnaide (Adamstown, Co. Wexford) and Killabban (Co. Laois), and tradition holds that the town of Abingdon in England took its name from him.
Renowned for balancing hermitage with evangelization, he died around 520 and is honored as a pre-Congregation saint.
His feast day is celebrated on May 13.
